When should you review your estate planning?
You should consider reviewing your estate in the following circumstances:
A significant life change
Significant life events — such as marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, the death of a beneficiary or the sale of your business or property interests — could necessitate a review. This will enable you to update key documents like Wills accordingly.
New legislative changes
Any updates to inheritance tax laws or other relevant regulations — perhaps in relation to trusts or gifts — may impact your liabilities. Speaking with a specialist solicitor can help you to understand exactly how your estate will be affected.
New health concerns
If you or a loved one experiences a serious health issue, it’s wise to ensure that your estate plan reflects your current wishes — especially when it comes to medical care and how assets would be distributed in the event of a death. Planning for long-term care may require the creation of trusts or other financial arrangements to cover expenses.
Every few years
Even without going through a significant life change, it’s good practice to review your estate plan every few years to ensure that it remains current and reflects your goals and wishes. Regular meetings with your solicitor can be highly beneficial to ensure that your best interests are protected.
