When to review your estate

You should consider reviewing your estate in the following circumstances:

1. Significant life change

Significant life events — such as marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, the death of a beneficiary or the sale of your business or property interests — could necessitate an Estate Review. This will enable you to update key documents like Wills accordingly.

2. Legislative change

Any updates to inheritance tax laws or other relevant regulations — perhaps in relation to trusts or gifts — may impact your liabilities. Speaking with a specialist solicitor can help you to understand exactly how your estate will be affected.

3. Health concerns

If you or a loved one experiences a serious health issue, it’s wise to ensure that your estate plan reflects your current wishes — especially when it comes to medical care and how assets would be distributed in the event of a death. Planning for long-term care may require the creation of trusts or other financial arrangements to cover expenses.

4. Regular update

Even without going through a significant life change, it’s good practice to review your estate plan every few years to ensure that it remains current and reflects your goals and wishes. Regular meetings with your solicitor can be highly beneficial to ensure that your best interests are protected.

How to review your estate

With Estate Review, we’ll evaluate your circumstances, estate and goals before formulating a comprehensive report that provides clarity on key decisions and next steps.

Whether you want to know how to safeguard your family’s future, manage tax burdens or structure your estate effectively, this gives you everything you need in one simple plan.

The process is straightforward. We’ll:

  1. Meet with you to understand your goals and challenges.
  2. Gather any relevant information and documentation.
  3. Seek input from your other professional advisors such as accountants or wealth managers (where required).
  4. Produce a bespoke report that highlights urgent priorities, reviews existing plans (such as trusts, Wills and Powers of Attorney) and outlines our recommended actions.
  5. Follow-up to ensure that you have the support you need to move forward confidently.
